Pool play into Gold, Silver, and Bronze brackets

Placement brackets solve a common complaint: a team drives two hours, loses one bracket game, and goes home. Pool play into Gold, Silver, and Bronze keeps everyone playing while still crowning a champion.

How it works

1. Every team plays the same number of pool games.
2. Pool results produce standings and seeds.
3. Top finishers go to Gold, middle to Silver, bottom to Bronze.
4. Each bracket plays out on its own.

A 12-team example

Three pools of four teams, three pool games each, then three brackets of four:

• Gold: the three pool winners plus the best second-place team
• Silver: the remaining second-place teams plus the best third-place team
• Bronze: the rest

Total games: 18 pool games plus 9 bracket games, so 27. On four fields at 75 minutes per game, that is about two full days or one very long day.

Write the tiebreakers first

Announce these before the first pitch, in this order:

1. Head-to-head result
2. Run differential, capped at plus or minus 10 per game
3. Fewest runs allowed
4. Coin flip

The cap matters. Without it, a 22 to 0 pool game can decide who plays for Gold, and teams will run up scores on purpose.

Common mistakes

• Uneven pools. A pool of three and a pool of five means different game counts and unfair seeds.
• No buffer. Leave one open slot per field before bracket play in case a pool game runs long.
• Silent standings. Post pool results as they finish so teams know where they stand.
